NCBI is a not for profit charitable organisation which offers support and services nationwide to people experiencing difficulties with their eyesight.
The Media Centre
The centre provides four specific services:
1. Conversion of documents into Braille formats
2. Recording of documents into audio formats
3. Braille training to the pharmaceutical industry
4. Audio description
The centre is the service provider of choice to a range of organizations including:
- Government departments
- Commercial businesses
- Statutory bodies
- Disability groups
- City and County Councils
- Pharmaceutical and packaging companies
1. Braille conversion
The Media Centre Braille Production Team uses a range of technologies including the Duxbury system for the conversion of documents into Braille. Our expert team carefully edits and proof reads all Braille documents to the highest standard. To give a Braille document the highest professional finish, we also offer a variety of document binding types.
2. Audio recording
Using a suite of five recording studios, the Media Centre records a wide range of print documents onto audio files in cassette, CD or WMA formats. All documents are narrated by professional readers, then edited and proofed for conversion. The Media Centre’s digital sound recording techniques and professional quality-control processes ensure excellent standards.
3. Braille training to the pharmaceutical industry
The Media Centre also provides Braille training and consultancy to organisations engaged in the production and quality assurance of pharmaceutical Braille packaging.
4. Audio description
Audio description enhances the understanding and enjoyment of a film or television programme for viewers with vision impairment by offering descriptions of actions, body language, expressions or background settings that are essential to the plot. NCBI’s Media Centre is currently the only producer of audio description in Ireland. The Media Centre produces programmes in audio description for RTÉ and commercial film production companies.
