Christmas Message From Our Chairperson

These are uncertain times financially for many people and for charities like NCBI. We have all tightened our belts to the point where we feel we can adjust no more.

Continue to fight for fairness and equality

The outcome of Budget 2012 was not known at the time of going to print but I sincerely hope that our lobbying efforts throughout the year have been successful and that people who are blind or vision impaired have been spared further cuts to their social welfare payments. NCBI shall continue to fight for fairness and equality for people with sight loss and that goal will remain at the heart of our work with Government.

Ongoing support

While some elements of life will remain uncertain, I am confident that the support offered by NCBI is a constant upon which anyone experiencing difficulties with their eyesight can rely. The organisation has gone from strength to strength over the last 80 years and we will continue to grow, with your ongoing support.

Patron of NCBI

Former President Mary McAleese served our country so well for 14 years and during that time was a fantastic patron of NCBI, attending many functions over the years. She was always warm and welcoming, giving thoughtful speeches and taking the time to speak to as many people as possible at events. Our new President Michel D. Higgins will do us proud both at home and abroad and will hopefully help us as we try to find a way out of the current difficulties and into a brighter future.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a Happy Christmas and the very best wishes for the New Year. I extend my thanks to all those who supported NCBI during 2011 — our fundraisers, volunteers, staff and my colleagues on the Board. The role of Chairperson is one I take great pride in and I look forward to continuing this work in 2012.
